President's Messages > April 2010

When you signed up to attend the March luncheon, I am certain that you were not expecting to get a history lesson from the Texas Land Commissioner. Wasn't that a fascinating and educational speech Commissioner Jerry Patterson gave? He is such a storysteller; and did you notice that he didn't have one note (nor a teleprompter!) and he would have continued telling more storties but we were past our time frame.

The Spanish Archives at Bexar County Courthouse fit right in with a lot of what the Commissioner was talking about, especially regarding the land grants. If you are interested in history, the Archives is a hidden treasure that most people do not know is available, and it is open to the public. However, I would call to make sure there are no special groups scheduled to be there before dropping by. Call Alfred Rodriguez at 335-2125. He is a good friend of mine---plus he is a good Republican! Alfred does all kinds of restoration and preservation of historical documents.

The Precinct and Senatorial Coventions are over, and now it is on to the State Convention in Dallas June 11th. I know quite a few of our members attended their conventions and will be delegates to the state, but I think we could do better. We should probably have someone come to speak before the 2012 primaries in order to stress the importance of attending these conventions and how each one of us can make a difference. Usually in Presidential election years, we do have more people attend.

Please read the flyer inside this newsletter submitted by Diane Dillon, our Military Affairs Chair. We know some that may think it is too early to think about putting wreaths on graves at Christmas but it is only eight months to the ceremony and we have committed to placing 1,000 wreaths at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery this December. Call Diane to purchase a wreath or ask for a sheet so you can sell them to your friends to honor our veterans.

We will be holding a new member orientation again this Summer for everyone who has joined Alamo City Republican Women since July 2009. This event will be a little different this year because it will be combined with a Meet-The-Candidates event. As soon as we have the confirmed date, we will let you know so you can get it on your calendar.

I am looking forward to seeing you on April 20th.
