President's Messages > December 2005

Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson, was a big hit at our November luncheon. He gave us quite an education on the history of the Land Commissioner's position and just what his job currently entails. The first time I met Commissioner Patterson, he was our guest speaker for Americanism month in November, 2000. I remember this because that was when I was elected President for the first time, and such a novice. I had only been a member of Alamo City Republican Women for two years and a citizen for three years. The next time Jerry spoke to us was in December, 2001 at a forum for the Land Commissioner's position, leading up to the Primary elections in March, 2002. Aren't we glad we chose him!

Bye-bye to BBQ's and in with Monte Carlo Casino Nights! We had more fun than the law allows on Friday the l8th at Aggie Park. We thank all the members and guests who attended plus all those who made donations but could not attend. Mary Fox did a fantastic job as did all the helpers--Ken, Carolyn, Tommye, April, Dee, Jim, George, Liz and Sandra, to name a few. I know I probably missed some names, but you know who you are and you are deeply appreciated. "Thank you" goes to all the members who provided the scrumptious food. I overheard one guest say, "Alamo City always goes all out with their decorations and food."

I am sorry some of you had to leave early because you missed the final act of the evening. We were entertained by the comedy duo of Diaz and Peden! They were hilarious. If they ever give up "judging" we know they could get a job at the Comedy Club!

This is going to be an annual event for us. Next year we are going to schedule it in either September or October so that it will not be so close to a holiday week. We hope that we can count on all of you to attend next year.

This is to inform those of you who could not attend the November luncheon that the 2006 board was voted in by acclamation. We are getting to be very international. Our new first vice-president, Sandra Balido, is from Mexico and our recording secretary, Angelica Campos-Beach, is from Panama. It is so exciting to see these young women take on positions in our organization. I too wish to thank all of you for putting your trust in me once again as your President. I know we will have another fantastic year, only because you are such a wonderful group to work with.

There are so many great women who work behind the scenes and who help this organization run so smoothly besides the elected board. You are all very important! But there is one person whom I must single out, and she is Karen Tedder. Karen is the roster keeper who keeps track of who-and-when members joined, who is current with their dues and who are associate members. She provides lists to various committees each month: telephone, reservations, hospitality, membership and numerous lists to me. She also prints all the mailing labels, she updates home addresses and email addresses. You really would be amazed if I were to mention all of the activities she is involved with outside of our organization plus tending to grandchildren. So please be sure to thank her when you next see her.

I hope you will join us on December l3th for our Christmas luncheon. We will be giving away fabulous free door prizes.
