President's Messages > January 2006

I knew our Christmas luncheon was going to be a fun meeting, but I think it exceeded all expectations! We began with being entertained by the velvet voice of Loretta Cormier accompanied on the piano by Barry Brake.

After the presentation of the books, underwear and socks given to representatives of the SAMM Family Transitional Living Center, Borah Van Dormolen, our new Texas Fedeation of Republican Women President took center stage and lived up to her reputation! She installed our new Executive Board and then went on to give a dynamic explanation of the workings of the Federation.

We had ten elected officials and six candidates in attendance; those who wished to address us did so. However, the warmest welcome was given to Santa Claus (a.k.a. Roger Brisette, Judge Massey's husband). Santa helped to distribute nineteen free prizes, five of them donated by Santa and his wife. The rest of the gifts were donated by some generous board members.

With the newly elected and very talented team of ladies, I know Alamo City Republican Women is going to have another exciting year. We are starting off in January with Susan Reed, the Bexar County District Attorney as our guest speaker. I know that many of you newer members have never met nor heard Susan speak, so you are in for a treat.

We received the exciting news at the luncheon from Romanita Matta-Barrera, Senator Cornyn's Media Director and Alamo City Republican Women member, that the Senator has accepted the invitation to speak at our Membership Recruitment Reception in February. Sandra Balido is starting out with a bang, snagging the Senator on her first try.

The McNeel family has once again generously offered their home to us for the reception. It is the perfect venue. Except for one year, we have had lovely weather, and even on that cool day it was sunny. We are aiming to recruit a minimum of fifty new members at this event; we recruited forty new members last year. I have already been receiving enquiries brought about by the announced reception in the South Texas Republicans' newsletter. So start making your lists of friends now as to whom you would like to invite to both meet Senator Cornyn and to join Alamo City Republican Women.

Since the Membership Recruitment Reception is not a fundraiser, we will keep the price very reasonable for guests to attend. For members who have paid their 2006 dues, the cost will be only $l0.00 plus a plate of finger foods. For all other guests, the fee will only be $35.00. We will also accept sponsorships so that we may invite some College Republican Club and High School Republican Club members. We will be giving away free memberships to the women who attend who are not members of another Republican women's club.
